Henschke Johann's Garden Barossa Grenache Blend 2023 - 6 Bottles

Winery Background

Founded in 1868, Henschke is a sixth-generation family winery renowned for producing some of Australia’s most iconic wines. Stephen and Prue Henschke continue the legacy with a focus on site expression and sustainable viticulture. Johann’s Garden is part of the Legacy Collection, named in tribute to Johann Christian Henschke, who planted the first vines in the Barossa in the mid-19th century. The wine honours the region’s deep connection with the Grenache–Mataro tradition, inspired by southern Rhône blends.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions

The fruit for the 2023 release was sourced from old-vine Grenache and Mataro vineyards across the Barossa Valley. The 2023 season was mild with long, slow ripening, allowing grapes to achieve exceptional colour, fragrance, and purity. The combination of ancient soils and low-yielding vines gave fruit of remarkable intensity and balance, while maintaining freshness.

Winemaking Process

Hand-harvested grapes were fermented separately in small batches with gentle plunging to extract flavour and tannins. Post-fermentation maceration enhanced texture and complexity before pressing. The wine was then matured for 10 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads to soften tannins and preserve the aromatic vibrancy of Grenache and the savoury structure of Mataro.

Tasting Notes

Brilliant crimson garnet in the glass. Fragrant aromas of red cherry, raspberry compote, rose petals, and wild herbs, layered with subtle spice, anise, and earthy undertones. The palate is supple and medium-bodied, showcasing vibrant red fruits, dried herbs, and savoury spice, supported by fine, silky tannins. A beautifully balanced wine with energy, lift, and a long, graceful finish.

Food Pairing

Pairs seamlessly with roast lamb, game bird dishes, chargrilled vegetables, or wood-fired pizza. Its balance of fruit and spice also complements Mediterranean cuisine and semi-hard cheeses.

Story Behind the Wine

Johann’s Garden is a tribute to the Barossa’s pioneering vineyards and Henschke family history. Inspired by the European tradition of planting family kitchen gardens alongside vines, this wine represents a place of gathering and abundance. The 2023 vintage captures the elegance and vibrancy of Grenache–Mataro from the Barossa’s finest old-vine sites, crafted with a modern, sustainable touch.
