Basileus Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021 - 6 Bottles
About Basileus
Basileus is a Greek term that has signified various types of monarchs throughout history and is most commonly understood to mean āKingā. The Barossa is often regarded as the king of Australiaās red wine regions, and this Shiraz pays homage to that reputation. Crafted in a small-batch winery, Basileus wines are made from carefully sourced parcels of fruit to reflect both the prestige of the region and the elegance of the variety.
Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
The 2021 growing season in the Barossa was close to ideal, with a cool, even ripening period followed by warm, dry days that delivered fruit of outstanding quality. Grapes were drawn from mature vineyards across Stonewell, Bethany and Angaston, each contributing depth and complexity. Low yields and excellent natural acidity provided berries of concentrated flavour and vibrant colour.
Winemaking
Harvested in the cool of night to preserve freshness, the fruit was gently crushed and fermented in small open fermenters. Traditional hand-plunging encouraged optimal colour and tannin extraction, while daily temperature control maintained balance. Following fermentation, the wine was matured in a combination of seasoned French and American oak barrels for around 12 months. This careful oak regime imparted subtle spice and structure without overshadowing the Barossa fruit purity.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep crimson with a dark ruby core.
Aroma: Aromatic layers of ripe blackberry, dark cherry and plum with hints of mocha, vanilla and cracked pepper.
Palate: Generous and full-bodied, showing plush black fruits, liquorice and warm spice wrapped in fine tannins.
Finish: Long, smooth and velvety with lingering notes of dark chocolate and oak spice.
Food Pairing
Perfect alongside slow-roasted lamb shoulder, grilled rib-eye steak or a rich mushroom and lentil bake. Serve at 16ā18°C and decant for best enjoyment.
