Nannup Ridge Wines Western Australia Epic Shiraz 2018

Winery Overview

Located on the granite ridges of the Blackwood Valley in Western Australia, Nannup Ridge was established in 1998 on a 16-hectare site with exceptional soils and an elevated aspect. The estate is owned and run by the Fitzgerald brothers, and their winemaking is overseen by award-winning contract winemaker Bruce Dukes. The vineyard produces Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and prides itself on crafting wines that reflect its unique terroir.

Region & Vintage Conditions

The 2018 vintage for this Shiraz comes from vines grown in the Blackwood Valley, benefiting from long hours of sunshine, cool evening breezes and granite-loam soils that encourage flavour concentration and natural acidity. These conditions help the grapes reach optimal ripeness while retaining elegance and textural finesse.

Winemaking Techniques

This Shiraz is carefully crafted to emphasise varietal character and structural balance. After harvest, the fruit undergoes gentle extraction to preserve aromatics and finesse, followed by maturation in selected oak to integrate flavour and tannin structure without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a polished, approachable wine built for both early enjoyment and short-term cellaring.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep ruby-garnet with a hint of brick at the rim, signalling some developed characters.

  • Aroma: Rich dark berries and black cherry, with plum and subtle exotic spice, layered with gentle oak.

  • Palate: Medium-to-full bodied, showcasing juicy dark fruit, blackberry, ripe plum, and peppery Shiraz spice. Smooth Merlot-like softness integrates with refined tannins and well-balanced acidity.

  • Finish: Long and lingering, fruit-driven with a warm spice note and a graceful fade.

Key Characteristics

  • Rich yet refined Shiraz with good regional expression.

  • Balanced structure combining ripe fruit, soft texture and refined tannins.

  • A fine example from a respected Western Australian boutique producer.

Food Pairing Recommendations

Pairs beautifully with hearty dishes: grilled rib-eye steak or lamb cutlets, rich beef stew with root vegetables, pepper-crusted kangaroo fillet, or a mature cheese platter with firm-textured cheeses (like aged cheddar or gouda). Also elegant enough to enjoy by itself for a relaxed evening in front of the fire.
