Moppity Vineyards 'Block C12C' New South Wales Gamay 2023 - 12 Bottles
Winery Background
Moppity Vineyards began as a familyârun estate in 2002 under Jason and Alecia Brown in the cool, elevated Hilltops and Tumbarumba regions of Southern NSW. The Block range showcases distinct vineyard parcels, and BlockâŻC12C highlights Gamay from their Tumbarumba site, where these Burgundian-style grapes flourish.
Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
The 2023 season in Tumbarumba featured cool, elevated conditions with long, even ripening. Low yields brought concentrated, pure fruit from this granitic soil site, while overall Australian vintages presented lower yields amid LaâŻNiña weather patterns.
Winemaking Process
BlockâŻC12C grapes were wildâfermented on skins for 14 days and then gently pressed into twoâ to threeâyearâold French barriques for nine months. The wine was bottled unfiltered and veganâfriendly, with minimal intervention to preserve its freshness.
Tasting Notes
This mediumâbodied Gamay displays vibrant aromas of red cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, rose petal, white pepper and earthy spice. The palate is crisp and juicy with supple tannins, herbal lift and an elegant, lingering finish. Notably it earned 93 points and was praised as âa little gem of a Gamayâ for its finesse.
Food Pairing
Serve lightly chilled with duck rillettes, mushroomâthyme tart, sesameâcrusted tuna, charcuterie, roast chicken or goat cheese beetroot salad. Its vibrant red fruit and savoury lift make it a flexible option at the table.
Story Behind the Wine
BlockâŻC12C emerged as a standout block on Moppityâs Tumbarumba site, with its Gamay vines capturing the regionâs coolâclimate elegance. By bottling this singleâparcel wine, Moppity underlines its belief that place matters. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of its site. Fresh, expressive and quietly confident.
