Winery Background

Meerea Park is a family-run estate in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley, under the stewardship of Rhys and Garth Eather. The ‘Terracotta’ Shiraz is named for the distinct red clay soils of the Homestead vineyard and reflects the estate’s focus on site-specific, expressive cool-climate Shiraz. It comes from some of the region’s oldest vine material planted in the 1960s and 1970s.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions

The 2021 vintage sourced Shiraz fruit from the highest blocks planted in iron-rich clay loam soils. A steady harvest season with warm days balanced by cool nights produced ripe, concentrated fruit without sacrificing acidity or freshness.

Winemaking Process

Approximately 10 % Viognier was co-fermented with Shiraz in open concrete or steel fermenters. After fermentation, the wine aged on lees in older French oak puncheons for six to ten months. This method softens tannins and adds mid-palate weight while letting the fruit remain centre-stage.

Tasting Notes

Deep crimson with purple edges and excellent clarity. The nose offers dark plum, black cherry, violet and subtle pepper spice. On the palate the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered with dark berry and earthy notes, supported by fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is long with structure and finesse..

Food Pairing

Pairs exceptionally well with grilled lamb, slow-roasted beef, mushroom and truffle risotto, or aged cheddar and dark chocolate. Its structure and savoury fruit profile also suit hearty root‑vegetable vegetarian dishes.
