Meerea Park Individual Vineyard Hunter Valley 'Alexander Munro' Shiraz 2023 - 6 Bottles

Winery Background

Meerea Park is a family-owned estate in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley, overseen by Rhys and Garth Eather. The “Alexander Munro” label is reserved for their top Shiraz block, tracing lineage to their great-great-grandfather’s vineyard in the region.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions

The 2023 Shiraz comes from the Ivanhoe vineyard in Pokolbin, planted in 2001 on well-drained sites. The 2023 season was cooler and milder than recent vintages, allowing grapes to ripen steadily and retain balance and acidity.

Winemaking Process

Hand-picked fruit, approximately 20% whole bunches was fermented in open vats with gentle plunging twice daily. After fermentation, the wine was lightly pressed and aged for roughly 18–20 months in French oak barriques (about 50% new), before a gentle fining and bottling under screwcap.

Tasting Notes

Bright crimson in the glass, with aromas of black and red berries, spice and a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied, with flavours of spicy plum and dark cherry, framed by fine tannins and savoury oak; well balanced, persistent and refined.

Food Pairing

Pairs well with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, venison or aged cheddar. Its moderate weight and spice profile also suit hearty vegetarian dishes featuring mushrooms or root vegetables.

Story Behind the Wine

“Alexander Munro” Shiraz is Meerea Park’s flagship expression of old-vine Hunter Valley shiraz fruit. The 2023 shows true varietal balance depth without heaviness and offers clarity, structure and age-worthiness in every bottle.
