Angove Long Row Riverland Merlot 2021 - 12 Bottles

Winery Background

Angove Family Winemakers has been producing wine in South Australia since 1886, now in its fifth generation. They’re known for combining vineyard heritage with wines that are accessible, fruit-forward and good value. The Long Row label is one of their everyday ranges, wines designed to offer enjoyable drinking without fuss, while still reflecting the character of their region.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions

This Merlot comes from Riverland vineyards, where warm days and moderate nights help grapes ripen fully while retaining some freshness. Soils in Riverland are often red sandy loam over limestone, which aids good drainage and flavour concentration. The 2021 vintage provided relatively stable conditions, with enough warmth to develop generous fruit and complexity.

Winemaking

After hand or mechanically harvesting at optimal ripeness, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel or large fermenters to preserve primary fruit character. A portion may see oak influence (seasoned or older oak) to add texture and smoothness. The wine is matured enough to allow tannins to round out, while keeping the fruit juicy and approachable.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep red with purple hues.

  • Aroma: Plum, black cherry, hints of red berries, with subtle herbal undertones.

  • Palate: Medium to full-bodied, soft tannins, well-balanced with dark fruit flavours and a touch of oak or spice sensation. Juicy but with enough grip for interest.

  • Finish: Smooth, lingering finish with fruit and mild spice.

Food Pairing

Pairs well with roast lamb, grilled red meats, hearty stews, tomato-based pasta dishes, or cheese platters with semi-hard cheeses.
